What is Verification code?

Also called: code in bio, claim code

On this platform, a verification code is a short string a creator places in the public bio of the account they are claiming. Because only the account holder can edit that bio, placing it proves control.

What it means for you

  • It is why we never ask creators for identity documents. Proving control of the account is all that is needed, and we would rather not hold ID for people in this industry.
  • A verified badge on a profile here means someone demonstrated control of the listed account — not that we vetted their identity.
  • No legitimate service will ever ask you for a one-time code sent to your phone or email. That is a different thing entirely, and it is always an attack.
  • The code is temporary. Once we have confirmed it, the creator removes it from the bio and nothing about the profile advertises how verification happened.
  • Verification proves control of an account at a moment in time. If control later changes hands — an agency relationship ending, for instance — the badge does not automatically know, which is why claims can be revoked and re-verified.

A concrete example

A creator starts a claim and receives a short code by email. She pastes it anywhere in the public bio of the account she is claiming and tells us it is in place. We check the bio, mark the profile verified, and she takes the code back out — the whole exchange takes a few minutes and involves no documents.

Illustrative. Not a real account, and not based on one.

How this shows up in reviews here

A verified badge changes how readers weigh a profile, and it unlocks the public right of reply. It says nothing about the quality of the service — that is what the reviews are for.
